Book Titles by Julie Bozza

My novel The ‘True Love’ Solution features not only Jules Madigan, freelance accountant, but also Jules’ favourite romance author, Ewan Byge. And given that I was writing about an author and his biggest fan, I had to be able to refer to Ewan’s novels. Which meant figuring out some titles.

Choosing a book title can be the hardest part of the whole undertaking! Sometimes the title comes naturally, or is even part of the original inspiration for the story. At other times, though, you rack your brains trying to come up with something – anything! – that might intrigue a potential reader and convey at least a hint of the mood, theme or subject matter of the book. And there I was, proposing to come up with not just one title for my book, but a number of them!

I cheated a little by borrowing one of Ewan’s titles for my own story: THE ‘TRUE LOVE’ SOLUTION. This was Ewan’s modern-day queering of The Philadelphia Story (otherwise High Society), in which Tracy marries Liz, and Mike sails away with Dexter in his yacht called the ‘True Love’. Using the same title for my book hinted at the crime elements of the story, as well as the need for Jules to make the right decision when it comes to his own Happy Ever After.

Of course, these titles I was inventing on Ewan’s behalf needn’t be all that serious, so I decided to have some fun with alliteration. SHERBET AND SIN was a borrowing from Lord Byron, who (in a letter) referred to Turkish baths as ‘marble palaces of sherbet and sodomy’. Byron was a dab hand with alliteration.

The other two titles were my own, though continuing in the same line: DESIRE AND DISCOMBOBULATION: A COMEDY will, I trust, speak for itself, as will the more romantic MARRIAGE AND MARJORAM.

And now, dear Reader, after that marathon effort all for the sake of one book, I need to come up with a title for my next novel. Wish me luck! I think I’m going to need it.

The Book

Jules Madigan loves his family and he loves his job. The only thing he’s missing out on is a Happy Ever After, like the ones written by his favourite romance author Ewan Byge. While he’s waiting for that HEA, Jules indulges himself in buying Ewan’s old typewriter as memorabilia – before realising he’s been defrauded. Through the fraud case, he makes friends with Police Constable Leonard Edgar – and through Leonard, Jules even gets to meet and work with Ewan Byge Himself! But the course of True Love never did run smooth, and soon Jules has to face some harsh realities.
