How To Howl At The Moon - Eli Easton

Sheriff Lance Beaufort is not going to let trouble into his town, no sir. Tucked away in the California mountains, Mad Creek has secrets to keep, like the fact that half the town consists of ‘quickened’—dogs who have gained the ability to become human. Descended on both sides from Border Collies, Lance is as alert a guardian as they come.

Tim Weston is looking for a safe haven. After learning that his boss patented all of Tim’s work on vegetable hybrids in his own name, Tim quit his old job. A client offers him use of her cabin in Mad Creek, and Tim sees a chance for a new start. But the shy gardener has a way of fumbling and sounding like a liar around strangers, particularly gorgeous alpha men like Sheriff Beaufort.
Lance’s hackles are definitely raised by the lanky young stranger. He’s concerned about marijuana growers moving into Mad Creek, and he’s not satisfied with the boy’s story. Lance decides a bit of undercover work is called for.

When Tim hits a beautiful black collie with his car and adopts the dog, its love at first sight for both Tim and Lance’s inner dog. Pretending to be a pet is about to get Sheriff Beaufort in very hot water.

Morgan Drake witnesses a murder in an alleyway. He is the only person who can give evidence in prosecuting the cop responsible for the crime. When the FBI safe house where he’s being held is compromised, he follows the instructions of his agent in charge and runs.
Nik Valentinov works for Sanctuary, a foundation that offers witness protection when FBI security is questionable.

When Morgan's handler sends him to Nik for safety, neither Morgan nor Nik could imagine that two weeks alone in a cabin in the woods could start something more. Something way more than just trying to keep Morgan alive. Something that makes their heart race more than danger. Love.

Dale MacIntyre, former Navy SEAL, works for Sanctuary. He’s the acting handler for a member of the Bullen family’s inner circle. He’s close to obtaining the evidence he needs to prove Elisabeth Costain's death was ordered by them… until someone gets in his way.

Joseph Kinnon, active Navy SEAL, is back on U.S. soil for the first time in months, and he’s told the tragic news that his stepsister is dead, gunned down in an alley by an unknown assailant. He’s determined to find out who murdered her…until someone gets in his way.
They both want the same thing but have different methods of accomplishing their goals. They both want the Bullen family brought to account, but one wants justice and the other wants revenge. What happens between them, however, has nothing to do with either.
Face Value (#3)

Beckett Jamieson, AKA Robert Bullen, has been rescued by Sanctuary from a situation in which he nearly died and is left temporarily blind.

Doctor Kayden Summers is the Sanctuary operative assigned to look out for him.

It soon becomes clear Beckett is the key to evidence left by his mom. Evidence that may well destroy the Bullen family. The two men become involved in a critical retrieval situation and when bullets start to fly there is only one thing between Beckett and death. Kayden.

Adam is given an assignment - to work with a man he hates. The same man that didn't trust him two years before and destroyed their relationship in a single day.

Lee is adamant that he needs to understand why Adam betrayed the Bureau and the Bullen case is the perfect cover to get back in his ex lover's life.

Against the backdrop of Sanctuary and the Bullen case can they both realise not everything they saw was real ...

Manny Sullivan is the backbone of Sanctuary. He has his fingers in every pie and when he spots Josh Headley where he shouldn't be, it is Manny who goes in and rescues him.

Josh is in Sanctuary witness protection after his dad turns on the Bullens. Not only is his dad a murderer but his ex is a liar who was using him for information. With his skill in information retrieval, he hopes to make a contribution to the solution.

What started with the death of Elisabeth Costain is drawing to a close and Josh and Manny are in the middle of it all.

When Manny risks his life could it finally be time for Josh to risk his heart?

Jake spends every Christmas at Sanctuary One.

From a small child the cabin was home for his family in the special season, and with the third anniversary of his dad's death approaching he arranges for Kayden, Beckett and himself to meet at the cabin a few days before Christmas. When a snowstorm means Kayden is blocked in NY with Beckett, Jake ends up in the cabin on his own.

Sean is being hunted and the only place he can run to is somewhere mentioned in an old journal - the original Sanctuary Cabin. The cabin is no longer in official use but it would be a good place to heal and take stock of just what the fuck is going on with his life.

Neither man is prepared for being stuck together for an entire week, nor for the secrets that threaten to get them both killed.

Worlds Collide (Sanctuary 7)

It is the day after New Years and Dale is en route back to Albany in a private jet with Emily Bullen. She is coming back home after turning states evidence on her husband Senator Thomas Bullen.

What no one factored in, not Sanctuary or the FBI, was the lengths Griffin Ryland would go to in the effort to protect himself.

Joseph finds out Dale is in trouble and it is only with the help of his team of SEALs that he can make sure Dale is safe and that Griffin Ryland can't cause any more trouble.

A snowy New Years, a deserted airport and a hostage situation with people already dead and suddenly the worlds of Sanctuary and the SEALs collide, with terrifying consequences.

Then, two weeks alone at a resort, falling deeper in love leave the two men with decisions to make and suddenly there is the chance to make forever a possibility.

The Book

Jacob Riley is one of Hollywood’s bad boys. Child star turned television and B movie actor, he has a reputation for wildness and difficulty honed by years of close encounters with drugs and alcohol. When his latest brush with the law results in him facing a prison term that could ruin his career, he is offered a choice: either participate in a new kind of rehab program or go to prison…again.

Mac’s is an adult education center located in a part of Los Angeles known for gang violence. They are not a drug rehab program, but Ethan Myers has agreed to oversee Jacob’s community service probation in exchange for a donation from Jacob’s wealthy father.

Ethan is less than impressed with the spoiled and immature actor, but the center – his labor of love – is struggling financially. He figures that he can put up with just about anything for four months in order to keep his program alive.

The two men don’t exactly start on a positive note. Jacob is angry enough to want to sabotage the program, and Ethan sees the young man as more of a hindrance than a help. Over time, however, a truce develops, and soon Jacob finds himself more involved with the center – and with Ethan – than he has ever been with anything in his self-centered life. But is this change in him permanent? Is the enfant terrible actually growing up? Or is he just marking time until his four months are up and he can return to his old life in Hollywood?

The Sinclair Selkie - Chris Quinton - Author Blog Post, excerpt and review

The Sinclair Selkie - Chris Quinton - Author Blog Post, excerpt and review

Folk singer Donal MacCraith is touring the Scottish Western Isles, documenting traditional songs and investigating his family history. He meets Niall MacLachlan in Stornoway and Niall invites himself along. He has a secret and an agenda of his own. Meeting Donal is the chance he needs to complete it.

American Donal MacCraith is on a road trip along the western coast of Scotland and the Western Isles. His family roots are there, but his main reasons for the extended vacation are the songs and legends. He's a folk-singer, come to collect some new old material.

In Stornoway he meets the Shielingers and Niall MacLachlan. Donal is attracted to Niall, but doesn't act on it, unable to guess if the man is gay or not. When he continues his exploration of Lewis in his rented motorhome, making for the small crofting community his grandmother left as a young woman, he finds Niall waiting for him on the road just outside the town. Donal invites him along, and Niall leaps at the chance.

Once out on the road, Niall makes a play for Donal, and they begin a casual no-strings relationship, though Donal senses Niall has an agenda of his own. Donal knows their fling won't last, but that suits him at first. Later, though, he begins to want something more, even though he has the feeling Niall is using him.

He's right, and it's the clue in the old stories of the Sinclair Selkie Donal's grandmother had told him. That clue will lead Donal to the startling truth behind the legend, and they'll both be faced with life-changing choices.

Blog Post

I discovered the Greek and Roman myths at a young age - preteen, as I recall. When I'd devoured every one I could grab from the library [it helped that my parents had given me the permanent loan of their library cards, which gave me access to the grownups' sections in a separate room], I started hunting down the myths and legends of other cultures. Those of the Celtic races soon became my absolute favourites.

I played in their pools in Dark Waters, and returned to them in my ongoing Melusine's Cats series, and now in my latest release, The Sinclair Selkie.

Selkies are the seal-people, one of the magical races in Celtic mythology. They live in the sea as seals, but they can take off their seal cloaks, become human in form to walk on the land. And interact with the locals. Sometimes this is against their will, as in the legends where a man steals the sealskin and carries the woman off to be his wife. Because she can't return to the sea without her sealskin, she is trapped on land and in a marriage.

Sometimes it's the male selkie who's the seducer. After a whirlwind romance he leaves the woman pregnant, but when the child is older, he comes back to claim it, and takes the child to the sea to join him as a selkie.

In The Sinclair Selkie, it's the first legend that drives the story of Donal MacCraith and Niall MacLachlan...

This is a beautiful love story set among legends and I enjoyed every minute of the journey. If you like myths and legends set solidly in among present day Britain then this is for you!

Excerpt

"Stick around, Donal MacCraith. You fit in just right."

That was all the invitation Donal needed, and for the rest of the evening he stayed with the Shielingers, taking over Niall's bodhran when it was put aside for the tin whistle. Then, after the last song had been sung, the last beers ordered, Fergus pinned Donal in a corner.

"That song you sang," he said without preamble. "'The Sinclair Selkie'. I know the family legend, of course, but that song is a new one to me, and my mam is a Sinclair of Lewis. Did you write it?"

"What legend would that be?" Niall asked, pushing in between Fergus and Donal.

"No," Donal said over Niall's question. "It was one my gran passed down to me." During and after his parents' acrimonious divorce, Mairi and his grandfather Colum had been the mainstay of his teenage years. It was from them he learned Gaelic as well as the Scottish songs and legends, and inherited the talent to perform them. "She was a Sinclair before she married a MacCraith and she got it from her gran."

"From Lewis?"

"Yeah. Her family has a croft on the western side of the island, not far from Mhangurstadh."

Fergus nodded, his ready smile widening to a grin. "My granny came from Mhangurstadh. Hey, that'll make us kin! And Creagliath is between Mhangurstadh and the sea. That's the name of the Sinclair's keep, or what's left of it, though I'm thinking you know that."

"I know the names." Donal chuckled. "And I'm going to be visiting the place. Gran wants lots of photos, and I have to find her sisters and say hello. She gave me directions to find their old home as well, to see if it's still standing, and maybe still lived in."

"I doubt it will be, on either count," Fergus replied. "Though a few of the old places have been bought up by mainlanders and outlanders and modernized for summer homes."

"What legend?" Niall raised his voice. "You've never said anything about it before." There was a slight edge to his words and his gaze remained fastened on Donal.

"Oh, God," Pat groaned. "You've done it now! Our Niall's searching for old songs as well, only he's more specific. He's fixated on the seal-folk. He's only been with us a week, but if I had a pound for every time I've heard him ask--"

"Shut up." Fergus grinned. "It's the legend of the Sinclair Selkie, like in the song, only it's a mite darker. God, I haven't thought about it for years." He settled himself comfortably on the piano stool, and with the ease of a born storyteller, he launched into the tale. "Robert Sinclair was one of the many bastard sons of Ferghal Macauley, got on Agnes Sinclair when Ferghal was visiting Orkney some twenty and five years previously." Around them, the pub's remaining customers grew quiet, obviously listening. "Now, it so happened that young Robert was staying a while with his uncle, James Macauley, and Robert liked nothing more than riding out and exploring his uncle's lands. He was returning from one such adventure at dusk, when he heard a lassie singing down by the shore. Her voice was so sweet and pure it drew him down to the sea's edge.

"There he saw a young woman sitting among the boulders, combing out her long, long black hair in the light of the setting sun, and her beauty nigh on stopped the breath in his lungs. He immediately fell in love with her and decided she would be his, no matter what may be. When he rode closer, he saw that not only was she naked under the cloak of her hair, but a rich fur mantle lay beside her on the rocks.

"She was a selkie." He paused for dramatic effect and took a swig of beer.

"Then the young Sinclair did what any man would. He snatched up the sealskin in one arm, the lassie in the other, and carried her away to his uncle's keep. James gave him land near the sea, and that's where Robert raised Creagliath, so's his bride would be close to the waters she loved so much.

"Now," Fergus continued, "this is where the legend parts from the song. If you're expecting this tale to end with her bearing his children until she finds where he has hid her sealskin, then takes it back and abandons him and her bairns for the sea, then you'll be wrong. She never did find it, so she was bound to him until the end of his days. Even his passing did not free her, for though he was dead and buried, he'd told no one where he'd hidden that mantle, not even his eldest son nor his favorite daughter.

"In time, she grew old and faded from the living world, forever bereft of the sea and her selkie kindred, and her half-human sons and daughters could not console her. Where her body lies, no one knows, but it is said her spirit still weeps among the ruins of that once tall keep, as she searches endlessly for her lost sealskin.

"And that, my friends, is the legend of the Sinclair Selkie." He flourished a bow to acknowledge the spontaneous applause from his audience. "Is that how your folks remember it, Donal?"

"Pretty much." He smiled, and didn't mention that his gran knew another ending.

Would you care to share my bredie? - Blog Post visit from Lillian Francis & Competition

Working with elephants in their natural habitat has always been Eric Phillips dream. Getting what he’s always desired introduces him to Tyaan Bouwer, the bush pilot that flies in his supplies, and Eric discovers the allure of South Africa goes beyond the wildlife and the scenery.

But in an area where bushveld prejudices and hatred bleed across the borders, realising their love will be a hard fought battle. Keeping hold of it might just kill them.

Would you care to share my bredie?

According to the research I did on South African cooking Bredie is a slow cooked stew, generally using mutton, flavoured with tomatoes and fragrant spices. It is thought to originate from the Dutch settlers.

Despite Eric being fresh off the plane from London, there is no pining for beans on toast, or fish, chips and mushy peas. He is eager to embrace all of the experiences the bushveld has to offer including the local dishes that his housekeeper prepares for him.

Eric and Tyaan share food on more than one occasion in the story and I had an enjoyable time browsing recipe books and South African blogs for traditional food that they could partake in. Vetkoek, frikkadel, sosatie. The food I discovered was rich and spicy, and heavy on the meat. Not just lamb either. Beef, goat, ostrich, antelope, crocodile.

Eric will happily try them all. Just don’t tell him what animal he’s eating!

In the name of research I recently tried Bunny Chow which is a South African curry served in a hollowed out loaf of bread. Such a hardship! Is there any countries style of cooking that you are itching to try? Or have you been brave enough to try something that could be classed as exotic? As a Brit I’m ashamed to admit that I’ve not eaten either black pudding or haggis.

Excerpt

Someone had wedged a piece of paper under his glasses. Tyaan frowned and fingered the edge of the note. It hadn’t been there when he’d gone out last night, meaning it could only have one possible source; although Tyaan had no idea when the twink had managed to write a message.

Slipping it out from under the gunmetal-grey stem, Tyaan barely glanced at the scrap of paper. Call me and a number. Predictable and unwanted communication. Twink’s name had been Iain, apparently. Tyaan crushed the paper in his palm and tossed the sparse missive into the waste bin by his feet.

Taking the tea bag from his cup, he squeezed out the excess liquid and dropped the wrung-out bag into the bin, where a brown stain oozed over the twink’s number, spreading the ink in a spidery mess.

“You ready?” The voice came before the knock on his door. Tyaan crossed the room in three strides and unlocked the door, and then he returned to the kettle and flicked the switch again. Emptying a sachet of instant coffee into the second cup, he tossed the rubbish and prodded the waste bin into the recess under the desk-cum-side table with his bare foot.

“You’re not ready,” Jessie said with a sigh. “We’re meeting Johan for brunch in less than an hour.”

“I’ll be ready. Coffee?” He pushed the freshly made cup of coffee toward her and waved his hand at the accoutrements that went with it. “Knock yourself out.”

He winced as she added two pots of creamer and three sachets of sugar to her drink, and ripped open a packet of biscuits. “For a doctor, you don’t give a damn what you put in your body.”

“And you don’t give a damn what you put your body in.” Jessie smiled sweetly, crumbs sticking to her lips. “I take it your guest has already gone.”

Iain left last night. And I take it you didn’t get laid.”

“I came on this weekend to keep you company and catch up with some friends from the hospital. I’m impressed you remembered this one’s name.” The false sweetness of her smile faded into something more sincere and slightly melancholy. “Does that mean you’ll see him again when we come back?”

“I’ll grab that shower now.” Tyaan picked up his tea and headed to the bathroom, aware of his best friend’s gaze following him across the room.

Lillian Francis

An avid reader, Lillian Francis was always determined she wanted to write, but a 'proper' job and raising a family distracted her for over a decade. Over the years and thanks to the charms of the Internet, Lillian realized she’d been writing at least one of her characters in the wrong gender. Ever since, she’s been happily letting her ‘boys’ run her writing life.

Lillian now divides her time between family, a job and the numerous men in her head all clamouring for 'their' story to be told.

Lillian lives in an imposing castle on a wind-swept desolate moor or in an elaborate ‘shack’ on the edge of a beach somewhere depending on her mood, with the heroes of her stories either chained up in the dungeon or wandering the shack serving drinks in nothing but skimpy barista aprons.

In reality, she would love to own a camper van and to live by the sea.

Don’t waste a chance at happiness…
Leo is a lonely workaholic with no time for romance in his life. His job in London takes all his energy and commitment. When he goes to Cornwall to stay with his terminally ill uncle, Edwin, love is the last thing Leo expects to find.

Tris lives in a cottage on Edwin’s land. Gay, but still half in the closet, he and Leo bond over their affection for Edwin, and the pull of attraction between them proves too strong to ignore. In Tris’s arms, in the wilds of Cornwall, Leo finds a peace he’d forgotten existed.

On his return to London, Leo finds himself grieving for more than just the loss of his uncle.

When some unexpected news gives Leo the chance to return to Cornwall, he’s afraid it will be too late to rekindle things with Tris. But having learned much from his stay with his uncle, Leo doesn’t want to look back and wish he’d done things differently.

It’s time to seize the day—if it’s not already too late.

Review 5/5

What can I say about this book. I cried, but it isn't so much sad as incredibly emotional. A wonderful story in a beautiful location.

Excerpt:

On the beach they crunched along the shingle to the edge of the rocks, then turned to look out over the sea. It was almost completely dark now, and the moon was rising, casting streaks of bright silver on the oil-black water.

They stood in silence, watching and listening to the crash of the waves. Leo’s heart felt suddenly too large for his chest. He was overwhelmed by the beauty of the place, a place that had barely changed since his childhood. The sea came and went with the tides, the sands shifted, but the rocks were constant. Yet here Leo was, an adult now rather than a boy, and his uncle reduced to an echo of the man Leo remembered—physically, at least. Unexpected tears prickled the backs of Leo’s eyes as a rush of emotion so strong that it made him draw in a sharp breath assaulted him. He swallowed hard, forcing the feelings back down.

Out of his peripheral vision, he saw Tris turn towards him, but Leo carried on gazing out at the gentle, rolling movement of the sea. Tris shifted his feet in the sand, bringing him closer. The warm skin of his arm brushed Leo’s, and Leo ached for more contact. He needed human warmth and touch to chase away the cold emptiness in his heart.

Stolen Dreams - Sue Brown - excerpt

After cheating on and losing the man he loved, Morgan Conway decided to get his life right. Now he owns a coffee shop and is engaged to Jase, an actor and rising star. All is perfect in his world until the man he thought was gone forever walks into his shop. His hidden feelings rush to the surface, unfortunately there for everyone to see, including his fiancé.

Shae Delamere was crushed when Morgan cheated on him five years ago. But he has a reason for seeking Morgan out. As Morgan and Shae get to know each other again, they discover the extent that friends meddled in their lives to keep them apart. Morgan cannot deny he is still in love with Shae, but he is engaged. With some hard decisions to make, Morgan struggles not to hurt the men he cares about—again. Shae has secrets he came to share with Morgan, but revealing them now could keep them apart for good.

Excerpt

The gentle thudding of Shae’s heartbeat woke Morgan to the new day. That, and some interesting gurgles in Shae’s belly which Morgan had apparently used as his pillow.

Blinking wearily, Morgan raised his head to find Shae still fast asleep. Even now he looked exhausted, purple marks marring the pale skin under his eyes. They hadn’t fallen asleep until the early hours of the morning, Shae making good on his promise to let Morgan fuck him until they were senseless. Morgan frowned as he traced the dark lines. The man was obviously not getting enough rest.

“Stop staring at me.” The words were sleep-slurred and grumpy. As far as Morgan was aware, Shae hadn’t actually opened his eyes.

“I like staring at you,” Morgan said. “Creepy stalker much?” Shae grumbled but with the hint of a smile.

“You’re in my bed. That hardly counts as stalking.” Morgan buried his face in Shae’s neck, feeling the rasp of Shae’s beard stubble across his cheeks. His dick was little more than half-hard after the night’s exertions, but the feel of the soft hair on Shae’s thigh was adding a frisson of pleasure.

“It is stalking if you stare at someone while they’re asleep,” Shae insisted, finally cracking one eye open long enough for Morgan to see a glint of green.

Pressing his mouth to the hollow at the base of Shae’s throat, Morgan could feel Shae’s life pulse beneath his lips. “It’s just admiration, and a little amazement that you’re here in my bed again.”

Blog Tour Post - The Last Grand Master - Andrew Q Gordon

In a war that shook the earth, the six gods of Nendor defeated their brother Neldin, god of evil. For three thousand years, Nendor and the Seven Kingdoms have known peace and prosperity and Neldin's evil was nearly forgotten.

But then Meglar, wizard king of Zargon, unleashes the dark magic of the underworld and creates an army of creatures to carry out his master's will. One by one, the sovereign realms fall as a new war between the gods threatens to engulf Nendor.

Leading the opposition to Meglar is Grand Master Farrell. Young and untried, Farrell carries a secret that could hold the key to defeating Meglar—or it could destroy the world.

Farrell is joined by Nerti, queen of the unicorns and Miceral, an immortal muchari warrior the Six have chosen as Farrell's mate. As Farrell and his new allies make plans to counter Neldin's evil, Meglar forces their hand when he invades a neighboring kingdom. Rushing to help their ally, Farrell and Miceral find themselves in the middle of the battle. Cut off from help, Farrell attempts an untried spell that will either turn the tide or cost he and Miceral their lives.

Excerpt

Farrell didn’t bother changing, though he probably should have. Instead he went straight to the prearranged meeting place. Nerti waited for him, giving him a wink when he arrived. He redirected the Door, and they exited almost at the eastern edge of the plains. Nerti wanted to run first, so Farrell used the time to fill her in on his new training.
“Baylec is an accomplished weapons master who has trained countless warriors. You’d be wise to give serious thought to his advice on what weapon best suits you.”
Nerti’s smooth gait belied her speed. Farrell’s hair whipping about his face told him they moved faster than it seemed. “I don’t need to think about it. I already know it’s the right thing to do. Other than not training with Miceral, I’m really excited by the change.”
He leaned forward and Nerti stretched out her stride, running even faster. Through their link, he had the impression she enjoyed the run. When they reached the designated spot, he regretted not riding with her more often.
Unfastening his staff from his back, he tapped into the closest Source for energy. Still seated on Nerti’s back, he wove the metal end of his staff over the ground, imprinting the magic where he needed it. Slow and deliberate, the work required his total concentration. Nerti’s presence helped focus him, allowing him to work quicker than usual.
When he had finished, he was about to suggest they take one last run when Nerti interrupted his thoughts. “Miceral asks when you will be back. Horgon told him of your dinner plans.”
“The Six forgive me! I forgot to tell Ral about dinner. Does he sound mad?”
Nerti’s presence in his mind disappeared for a moment. “He said he is pleased you told his father to come but wants to know when to expect you.”
“We’re done here. I accomplished my goal for today and more. If you’d let him know how soon you think we’ll be back to the gate, tell Ral I need about half an hour more to get ready.” His thoughts raced in several directions. “Oh, and ask him if he can request food for three from the kitchen as well. Please?”
Nerti ran toward the gate, her white coat a vivid contrast to the plains in the rapidly waning light. Farrell used the time to practice what Baylec had taught him, trying to see how well he could move the staff while riding.
He opened a small Door to the western side of Haven just before they reached the mountainside. They arrived near the unicorn quarters, where Klissmor waited patiently for his mate. Farrell hopped down, kissed Nerti below her horn—something he had learned she liked—and redirected the Door to his rooms.
Exiting inside the foyer, he waved his hand absently to close the portal. “I’m home.”
He went straight to the bath chamber. The full tub reminded him he needed to key Miceral to the spell that would allow him to empty it himself. He quickly emptied it, turned on the taps, and started to undress.
The first tug on the leather vest made his nose wrinkle. Waving both hands, Farrell made the vest disappear, leaving behind an equally smelly shirt. “Got to put a new spell on that.”
Laughter erupted behind him, and he found Miceral propped against the doorframe. “When did you become so put off by your training vest?”
“I think whatever Erstad did to enhance the protections meddled with the odor control.” He peeled the offensive-smelling shirt from his torso, and it vanished with a flash before it hit the ground. “In case you didn’t notice, leather doesn’t smell so great after I’ve been sweating in it.”
Miceral waved a hand under his nose. “Um… yes, I’ve noticed.”
Sneering playfully, Farrell sat on the edge of the tub and tugged off his boots. “Shouldn’t you be pestering me to hurry up instead of helping me waste time?”
“There’s no rush. Father won’t be here for another half an hour.” Farrell stared at Miceral, certain they had less time than that. Miceral smiled, motioning for him to get in the now-full tub. “I added a few minutes to your estimate to give you some breathing room.”

Max And The Prince - unedited excerpt - Bodyguards Inc #3

Max And The Prince - unedited excerpt - Bodyguards Inc #3

Coming 27 March

Book 3 in the Bodyguards Inc series

Book 1 - Bodyguard to a Sex God
Book 2 - The Ex Factor

Bodyguard Max Connery is used to being mistaken for being younger than he is.

Being carded every time he buys a beer is usual. Even though he's just turned twenty eight and has two tours in Afghanistan as a pilot under his belt.

When a threat is made on the life of a prince attending University in the UK, Max is the perfect choice to blend in with students and to keep Prince Lucien safe. Even if it means joining the swim team to be by his side.

But, when death visits the University, abruptly this job is a long way past keeping the prince happy and safe. Instead Max has to keep Lucien alive.

~~**~~

Drawing back his shoulders Max knocked on the door and waited for the enter before going in. There was no shouting now, just a horrible cold silence. Max quickly assessed the situation in the office. He categorized Teddy the giant, six eight at least, broad, short to the scalp hair, a scar on his forehead, black suit stretched over his muscled frame, ear piece dangling on his neck, and a scowl carved into his expression.

Which left the other one the Prince. Right? Didn’t look much like a prince though. The man was slouched in the chair with familiar white leads from ear buds plugged into an iPhone. Max couldn’t see the Prince’s face, hidden as it was by the fall of the hood on a bright sapphire Cardiff University sweatshirt. Baggy jeans and scuffed converse finished the look of couldn’t-care-less rebel. Max could hear the music the Prince was playing from here. Not the bones of it to recognise an artist, but the high tinny beat of the music that flowed in time with the tap of the guys left foot.

“Maxwell Connery, Theodore Estevan.” Kyle indicated the Giant and Max held out his hand to shake and was treated to a quick once up once down from Teddy, or Theodore as he was being introduced. “And this is Prince—“

“This is your man?” Teddy interupted with something akin to horror in his voice and stood up so violently that he caused the chair he had been on to skitter back and hit the wall. “This child.” Teddy’s voice held an inflection, something Mediterranean maybe? Although it was lost in the sheer dismay in the tone.

Max didn’t drop his hand, and whether Teddy couldn’t think of another reason not to shake it, or whether he was just being polite, Teddy grasped him hard and there was a quick squeeze that was probably supposed to underline Teddy’s intimidating size and strength. Theodore was strong, that was undeniable, but Max didn’t flinch.

“Mr Estevan,” Max acknowledged.

Max waited for the introduction to the elusive guy under the hood. Instead Teddy grabbed his chair and sat back down. There was evidently no rush to include the Prince in any of this, not that the Prince seemed at all bothered. Apart from the tapping of his foot and the rhythmic rise and fall of his chest he didn’t move an inch.

“Max is one of my best operatives,” Kyle said. His tone was that one he used when he was calming Ross down after a missing stapler incident, all calm and encouraging. Like if he said something in just the right way then the situation would be diffused.

Teddy sneered at Max. “You told me this Max was a pilot, ex Air Force. I don’t see that in this kid.”

“I am former RAF,” Max said. “Ten years, including two tours of Afghanistan.” Max refused to be insulted by the open contempt and disbelief on Teddy’s face. If it wasn’t for one crashed plane and a faulty ejection seat he’d still be flying, and he was proud of what he’s achieved in his time in the service. People could judge him on his age but not when it came to his accomplishments in his career.

Teddy huffed dramatically, and added an angry shake of his head.

“If you think I am handing Prince Lucien over to the care of someone as… little… as this man. What happens when someone comes up to attack? Is he going to blow them over with a kiss?”

Max didn’t retort. He wanted to, but that wouldn’t be professional. No, he had to let Kyle lead this. But hell if he would forget that kiss comment. He’d find Teddy and knock all six eight of him on the floor then stand and laugh. There was no adage more appropriate than the bigger they are the harder they fall. Max might only be five nine but he knew all the moves to bring tree-size men to their knees.

“I’d suggest you show my operative respect,” Kyle began. Max cast his boss a quick glance. That kind of language didn’t get sales, Kyle’s words could provoke, and provoke they did.

Teddy stood up again and Max winced as the chair smacked the wall hard enough to leave scuff marks.

“Prince Lucien will not be spoken to like that. We’re leaving,” he announced theatrically, with a wave of his hand, and the gentle press of fingers to hood-guy’s shoulder.

At the touch the hidden man moved away from the hand and with an exaggerated sigh he pushed back his hood and pulled out his earbuds. Then he stood up but Max couldn’t get a good look at him because Teddy was in the way.

“You need to go outside, Teddy.” The guy’s voice was slightly accented but English enough so that it was difficult to ascertain the country of origin, similar to Teddy’s. Prince Lucien sounded tired.

Teddy stood firm, “I’m not—“

“Teddy, I’ll handle this.”

“I don’t trust him, Sir,” Teddy insisted.

“I know you’re only thinking of me, but please Teddy, give me five.”

Teddy didn’t respond but there was a visible tightening of his shoulders and he spun, deceptively graceful for such a big guy, to face Max. There was one final stern glare that dripped with so much warning Max nearly took a step back, then Teddy moved away and left the room.

For the first time Max got a good look at the man who had been hidden under the hood. Dark hair, tousled and messy from the hood, still managed to sit in that just out of bed look with bangs that dropped to his eyebrows. With the hair was the darkest of eyes, a rich chocolate brown, and hell, the kid had cheekbones to die for, and a wry smile on his face. He didn’t look like any kind of Prince that Max had seen before, certainly not all spit polished and serious like he’d expected him to be.

Max couldn’t help himself, he smiled back and extended his hand. “Max Connery,” he offered.

“And I’m Lucien Manganello. Could I possibly have the room for a few minutes?” He was talking to Kyle who looked at both him and Max with concern on his face.

Kyle scooted up from his chair and left the room his hand briefly squeezing Max’s shoulder as he went past.

“Please, Max, have a seat,” Lucien said.

“I prefer to stand, Sir.”

“Call me Lucien. Please.” He didn’t make a move to sit himself, instead he tilted his head. “Do you swim?”

Max blinked at the question. Swim? Was this a way to start a conversation? “I swim,” he said. He tried not to let the uncertainty in his head filter into his voice. He’d been on four separate jobs with BI and he’d never been asked whether he could swim before.

“How well?” Lucien tilted his head as he spoke his dark eyes narrowing as he assessed Max. “I mean you’re not tall, so your length would be less than…” he trailed away and stopped talking, a sudden flush of colour on his cheeks.

“I swim well enough,” Max answered.

“Well enough to be on a swim team?” Lucien sounded so earnest and so young. He was twenty-five but at this moment he sounded so eager and excited that Max felt terribly old. A swim team? That would involve swimming fast and yes, he could swim, but he wasn’t the fastest or the best swimmer out there.

A full sentence didn’t immediately come to mind. “Uhm…”

Lucien huffed a laugh. “Actually, you don’t have to answer that, I mean, it’s the perfect way to keep close to me, if you practice with the swim team I mean. Or maybe you pretend to be my boyfriend or something otherwise so you can come watch me practice. Because, I won't give up my swimming okay, whatever you say, however many times you lock me in a room, I will always find a way to get out and swim.”

The Changed Man: redeeming a character - KJ Charles

The Changed Man: redeeming a character - KJ Charles

In my Charm of Magpies series, the hero Stephen is a magical law enforcer trying to keep a lid on magical crime in Victorian England. The last book, Flight of Magpies, shows Stephen under attack. An incredibly valuable gift from his lover Lord Crane is stolen, his apprentice is framed for the theft, and Crane’s life is put in terrible danger. All of this horribleness to poor Stephen is carried out by a minor villain, a ruthless, amoral, self-serving thief named Jonah Pastern, who changes sides whenever convenient…and who also abandoned his own lover, leaving him to go to gaol in his place.

Jonah sounds like a great guy, right?

The responses I had when I said I was going to write Jonah’s story included ‘WHAT?’, ‘That arsehole?’ and ‘Seriously?’ Author Elin Gregory described Jonah’s attack on Crane as “the most brutal thing in any of your stories … it’s going to take a bit for me to get past that”. And one of my beta readers on the MS expressed a strong desire to see Ben, Jonah’s unfortunate ex, “push the bastard off a roof”.

So how do you make an unreliable, maybe dangerous, certainly unrepentant villain into a hero that readers can believe in, who earns his own happy ending?

Well, here are my rules:

1) Play fair. If a character did bad things, he did bad things. No explaining away that the gun was never loaded, or all the people he assassinated were nasty so it was okay really.

2) Understand why. This is the most crucial thing in writing any antagonist or villain. Did he know what he was doing was bad, or did he justify it? What was his goal? How did he look himself in the mirror? Not caring, not letting himself think about it, seeing the world differently, telling himself the story a different way? Can the reader understand what drove him, even if she doesn’t agree?

3) His other half may grant him forgiveness in a spirit of love and mercy. The reader cannot be expected to. The story has to make him earn the reader’s trust, even if his lover doesn’t.

4) Even if the reader and the lover are prepared to forgive, what about the rest of the world? The relatives of the murderer’s victims, the people who were burgled, the outstanding warrants: there are consequences that have to be faced or escaped, but not handwaved away. If the assassin says he’s sorry and the FBI basically shrug and say, “No hard feelings,” his crimes might as well have been parking tickets.

5) Redemption can’t just work within the relationship. The serial killer who says “I won’t do it any more because I love you!” is clearly not a reformed character. The coward who risks himself, the killer who tries to save a life, the traitor who proves loyalty beyond any expectation: these are classic arcs because they show us people who’ve confronted their failings and tried to be better.

To sum up: For a villain to turn into a hero the reader can believe in, and trust after the book ends, the story needs to confront what he did, make the reader understand why, and show us both consequences and redemption.

A couple of examples at opposite ends of the spectrum, with spoilers for the Adrien English series and the Prosperity series:
Jake in the Adrien English books by Josh Lanyon is a pretty crappy person. He’s the love interest from the start of the series, there’s no turnaround on the reader there, but nevertheless, he cheats on Adrien (and on his girlfriend with Adrien), strings him along horribly, abandons him for a couple of years. But we know why (because he’s cripplingly closeted), we see his redemption when he saves Adrien at the price of the reputation he’s spent books screwing him over to protect, and by God he faces the consequences. Jake pays in full for everything, and learns from it. We can really believe in his redemption, and their HEA.

Milord in the Prosperity series by Alexis Hall takes ‘crappy person’ to a new level. He’s a brutal crime lord. Shackles confronts us with horrific cruelty, for which Milord is totally unrepentant. But we can see reasons for how warped he is in his terrible history, and more, we can see that the one good thing in his life is his lover, defrocked priest Reuben. It’s not that Milord tries to improve for Reuben. He doesn’t want to improve. He’s a genuinely bad person. But their bond is so intense and compelling that Milord is pulled towards being the man Reuben wants, and when he does come through with a decent act in Prosperity, it is spectacular. He is mostly unredeemed, there is no saintly turnaround, but the reader is left in no doubt of the rightness of their deeply odd relationship and Milord’s reluctant commitment to it. (If you haven’t read this series, RUN DO NOT WALK.)

And in the middle of the spectrum is my minor villain. Jonah had his reasons for what he did. He learns, in a hard school, the consequences of his acts, big and small. And he has the opportunity to confront his past failures. Whether what he does is enough to earn forgiveness for what he did…well, that’s up to Ben to decide. And, of course, the reader. Let me know how you get on.

With thanks to Emilia Agrafojo for the post topic! Do recommend your favourite redeemed bad guys in the comments, or tell me why they don’t deserve a HEA…
