Christmas recommendation - Reader post from LaQuette

Hello,

My name is LaQuette and I’m an author of African-American, contemporary, and erotic romance. I am so humbled and thankful that R.J. would open up her blog to fans and friends to allow us to talk about our favorite Christmas book(s). I actually requested this day specifically because today is a special day for me. It’s actually my birthday. You might be wondering what my late November birthday has to do with Christmas in December, just give me a second, and I promise you’ll see the connection. J

For me, my birthday is a time for reflection on my life and an opportunity for me to count every single one of my blessings. If you’ve never taken the opportunity to focus on the things that most of us take for granted, things like family, food, clothes, shelter, and water, then you’re missing an opportunity to truly see what’s important in life. Taking this moment of introspection always fosters a sense of extreme gratitude for me, and that gratitude always makes me want to do something for someone else or in some way, share what I’ve been gifted with.

In R.J. Scott’s, The Christmas Throwaway, Ben Hamilton does just that, he shares what he has with Zach Weston who has been turned out in to the cold by his family. Through a simple gesture of kindness Ben helps to restore Zach’s faith in not only humanity, but himself. By simply doing something nice for someone else, Ben added to his own list of blessings and found love in Zach.

What I love most about this novel is that it clearly depicts how one small act can change a person’s life. It shows us what a huge impact we can have on one another by doing something simple and nice. This unpretentious yet powerful notion is expressed so beautifully in this well-crafted tale that every time I read it I always ask myself, “What would happen if we were all a little more like Ben?”

This idea of being kind for kindness’ sake, paying it forward, it’s what Christmas is all about. Unfortunately, Christmas has become so commercialized that it seems people are so concerned with what they receive that the sentiment behind the gift is often lost. November 30th is a stopping point for me every year. I too get caught up in life and sometimes lose sight of what’s really important. However, on that day, I start taking stock of myself, get over myself, and start thinking about someone else and suddenly I’m in the mood for Christmas.

The truth is, regardless of your religious affiliation, Christmas is really a time to do something nice for someone for no other reason than it’s nice to be nice. In my opinion, it’s something we should be doing every day of the year. But if you can’t get into that spirit every day, at least open your heart at Christmastime. And if you need help getting in to that spirit—and you can’t do the whole birthday reflection thing on November 30th like I do, because it’s not your birthday—pick up a copy of The Christmas Throwaway by R.J. Scott, and I promise you that Ben Hamilton will make you want be nice, because it really is nice to be nice.

Alpha, Delta and the count up of books

Alpha, Delta and the count up of books

So, today I sent All Romance my finished manuscript for Alpha, Delta... YAY!

Problem was, they asked for my backlist, detailed by book.

I started to type them out then realized that I had a couple more than I first thought and so I instead made a spreadsheet. And what I realized with quite a bit of shock, is that Alpha, Delta is my 72nd book.

Seventy-bloody-two.

Somehow I skipped past 68 and 69 without realizing (and I had been childishly looking forward to writing book 69 and tweeting the number all the time!)

Anyway. Seventy-two. Wow, that is way more than I imagined I would write way back when I first submitted Oracle. I am so lucky to be able to write, and so lucky that people would be interested in reading my stuff.

So... Thank YOU for reading.

Christmas Reader Recommendation from Stacia

Christmas Reader Recommendation from Stacia

I love the Christmas season, family, the songs, children laughing, the decorations, the lights and most of all the books. Books are important to an advid reader like myself. I have picked several of my favorite holiday stories to share with you. The following books are in no certain order.

1. Cherish Your Name by Mary Calmes

If you’ve read any of the Warder Series by Mary Calmes, you are familiar with Malic Sunden. He has this hard exterior and doesn’t want to be happy but he is. Dylan is his Hearth. I loved this book because it showed Dylan’s family. The most important reason I love this book is it shows Malic’s softer side. It’s a fantastic holiday read. I have it on audio and have listened to it many times.

2. Grumble Monkey and the Department Store Elf by B.g. Thomas

This is a story about learning to be proud of yourself even if your blood family is not proud of you and that a true family are those who love you and accept you for the way you are. Nick learns how not to be a scrooge and not to think this world would be better off without him. All because of a department store elf named Kit he rescued from a snow storm.

3. Snowbound in Nowhere by Andrew Grey

Ok besides the fact that Andrew Grey wrote this, I cannot tell you why I like this story. I just do. Maybe it’s because you find something or someone special when you least expect it. Also it reminds me of A Smokey Mountain Christmas J

4. The Christmas Throwaway by Rj Scott

This is by far my favorite Christmas story ever. I have read it several times. When I got the audio I listened to it more times that I can count. I listen to this when I am in a bad mood or I’m sick. It’s my go to book. What I love about it is it shows you what a family really is. It is not always the one chosen for you, it could be the one you chose for yourself.

5. Turkey in the Snow by Amy Lane

What’s not to like about this book? I mean, sexy grown men knitting. I love the series. The characters are moody, funny and pigheaded.

6. Christmas Cole by B.g. Thomas

I adore this story, a lesson in humility and in being yourself and not losing sight of who that is. Like Dorothy says, “There’s no place like home.”

7. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

Good vs. Evil. Good wins out in the end. Well I’m not quite sure I’d call Scrooge evil. A mean, stingy grouch, yes but not evil, mabye. I like to read this around Christmas time and then I’ll go watch the movie, the one with Patrick Stewart playing Scrooge. The adaptation with George C. Scott is my favorite though.

8. Letters From Father Christmas by J.R.R. Tolkein

From the author who brought us the magic of Lord of the Rings brings the magic of the North Pole. Here is the description I found that explains this magical treat. “Every December an envelope bearing a stamp from the North Pole would arrive for J.R.R. Tolkien’s children. Inside would be a letter in a strange, spidery handwriting and a beautiful colored drawing or painting. The letters were from Father Christmas.

They told wonderful tales of life at the North Pole: how the reindeer got loose and scattered presents all over the place; how the accident-prone North Polar Bear climbed the North Pole and fell through the roof of Father Christmas’s house into the dining room; how he broke the Moon into four pieces and made the Man in it fall into the back garden; how there were wars with the troublesome horde of goblins who lived in the caves beneath the house, and many more.” I read this book every Christmas.

9. Something For Santa by AKM Miles

I like this one just because it’s sweet, romantic and it’s Christmas. Two men, both needing someone to help them. Derek is determined to pay his mother’s medical bills after she passes. Max needs help with his son, Michael. Derek, who plays the department store Santa ends up working for Max, taking care of Michael. On payday money was exchanged but as time went on hearts were exchanged. Love it!

10. Twas The Night Before Christmas

I know it is technically a poem but it was in a book J Christmas wouldn’t be the same without the story about the jolly old elf and his eight tiny reindeer each year.

Christmas Feelings

What is it about Christmas that makes it my favorite time of year? There are so many things that make it my favorite. And they all combine to make the season special. There is that change in the weather, turning nippy and frosty. Bring out the coats, hats, and mittens, the bundling up to stay warm. I love cozying up to a blazing fire in the fireplace. The frenzy of decorating the inside and outside of the house with lights, tinsel and bows making everything cheery and bright.

There are the smells of the pine tree and apple cider or hot chocolate, the baking gingerbread for the frosted house. Then you take the time to cook the perfect meal to share with family and friends. Breaking out the traditional family recipes that have been handed down through generations, because it wouldn’t be a holiday meal without them. You go out there shopping for the perfect gift, seeing the joy on a person’s face when you’ve gotten it right. All of this makes the season for me. All of this is the magic that is Christmas.

The Christmas season also allows us to relive our childhoods and all of its memories, the excitement of the first snow of the season, and sledding down a hill. There’s waiting for Santa to come on Christmas Eve. And how early is too early to wake up to see if you got what you asked for or how many things you got from your list? There’s gathering of family, old and young. Of putting up with Auntie’s pinching of your cheeks, her saying ‘you’re getting so big.' And the annual viewings of A Charlie Brown Christmas, along with all of the Rankin and Bass animated shows, Frosty, and Rudolph. The sights, the sounds and the smells, bring back all of the memories shared with loved ones.

Then when all of the hustle and bustle is over, and the excitement winds down, there is the peace and contentment of having spent time with family and friends. Sometimes it’s a feeling of having just survived it all. Then you can the look forward to the next exciting New Year.

For me, the season evokes the magic of childhood. You have hope, some fears, laughter, and love. Those same elements I find in the stories that come out at the holiday season. Christmas stories have all the elements I love in a book. You watch the characters with all of their ups and downs, their foibles that are the same as the people you know in real life. You read the stories wishing for them to have a special someone to share the magic of Christmas. Along with hope, magic and the characters journey to their happy ever after are all there. I find myself reading Christmas stories year round to recapture the warm feelings whenever I need a pick me up or to renew my faith in the world.

Because isn’t the greatest gift of all true love?

Christmas Recommendations - Guest post from Kris Jacen

Christmas Recommendations - Guest post from Kris Jacen

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, Feliz Navidad, Happy Kwanza, Good Yule!

Whatever holiday you celebrate this time of year, I wish you the happiest, healthiest, safest for this year and years to come. RJ asked for some recommendations on readers/authors/editors (yeah, I slipped that one in) favorite holiday reads. Here’s a few of mine.

Hugs, Kris
The Naughty List by Kiernan Kelly

Kris Kringle as a homicide detective and a serial killer leaving Christmas song clues? This one has been around for a long time, and I don’t know if you can still get a copy (maybe Kiernan will see this is re-issue it?), but I read this every holiday. It’s just such a twist on the “typical” holiday story (and no, I’m not telling who the killer is).

Cattle Valley Mistletoe by Carol Lynne

I love the themes that run through this story that’s set around the holidays but more touches on personal relationships between people and what they believe.

Heaven Sent 5: Genesis by Jet Mykles

Ah, Jet’s boys and New Year’s Eve. Yeah…it’s no secret that I love her rockers and to get them all in one book with their partners? Happy New Year, indeed.

Christmasing With You by William Neale

This one is bittersweet for me. I remember when I put out the holiday story call really late in the year (think I put it out in August for December releases?) and thought I’d get a handful of stories for that year (yeah, I wasn’t thinking ahead). Boy was I surprised. This was the first of 42 stories that I edited that holiday season and oh, did it make me cry.

It’s about finding love again after losing the love of your life. Some know, some don’t but William passed away unexpectedly a few months after this story released and I’m still holding out hope and sending thoughts/prayers/vibes that someday his partner will find his “Cam”.

The Christmas Story - Reader Review from Rebekah

The Christmas Story - Reader Review from Rebekah

When I put a call out to the readers in my RJ Scott group for Christmas recommendations Rebekah asked if she could talk about Luke 2.

Over to you Rebekah
The Book Of Luke is an incredible journey of a man from birth to death to life again. Luke the author was a doctor by trade and yet did a marvelous job of conveying an awesome story about an amazing man.

We start with the announcement of this man's cousin's immanent birth to someone who longed for children and no hope of having any. You get the impression of their reserve and excitement about the news. The announce of his own birth was less well received. His mom Mary hadn't married yet and scandal was something husband to be Joseph didn't want any part of. But the supernatural being who had announced both births told Joseph everything would be just fine that Mary his wife to be was carrying someone miraculous.

The king of that day decided on a census and taxes. Even in ancient days no one could escape taxes. So Joseph takes his pregnant wife to the city of his birth Bethlehem. Everybody and their dog must have been from the same city cause all the hotels were full. What were they supposed to do call ahead? Hey no phones back in the day. One of the hotel owners offered them a place in a stable. Thought that was a little a tacky. The man couldn't even let a pregnant lady have a bed. Wouldn't you know it, that baby decided it was a good time to make an appearance.

There were some shepherds staying in a field not too far away. They were awakened by a bright light and a voice coming out of the sky. The writer at this point has really got me hooked I can imagine the light emanating off a paranormal being against a star studded heaven with a loud beautiful voice telling them of a baby who's going to save the world. Then the writer builds up to filling the sky with beings of light and voices singing. You can feel the excitement of the shepherds as they talk among themselves about going to find this baby. You can tell from the writers description that when they find the baby they are held in awe of something so tiny that was going save a world.

The book goes on to tell about the life he led and many of the rituals the Jewish people observe. The miracles he performs are astounding. There are words of wisdom and warning. There are scenes of friendship and caring. The scene of his friend's betrayal and his death leaves you sad and shows the cruelty of the time. Then there is the triumphant coming back to life. They had expected him to perhaps lead an army and free Israel, in the end he freed their hearts and left them with hope. It was an inspiring read. I really enjoyed it.

My Christmas - Reader guest post from Yvonne

'Tis the Season......

To start, a big Thank You to RJ Scott for providing the space for this post.

Christmas is just around the corner and all sorts of things are happening. Whether it's because of the way things are set up in the US were the adverts on television and the setups in the different stores have "stuff" set up for Christmas before even Thanksgiving comes around (as of this writing, I have seen Poinsettias being sold - which I've associated with Christmas for a long time - already for sale and, quite frankly, living in Florida? Way too early to see them unless the plan is to keep them indoors) has made me a little bit of a Scrooge around this time of year. I steadfastly refuse to listen to any carols before Christmas week and tune them out whenever I hear them.

My reading list around this time of year is.....eclectic....and not necessarily season/holiday specific. It also varies from year to year and has a tendency to include books and authors that give me the 'warm and fuzzies' that get me in the proper mindset as opposed to being seasonal (the exception to this is A Christmas Carol, but not necessarily read every year). Some (but not all) authors that make for holiday reading for me include Andrew Grey, Andrew Q. Gordon, Amy Lane, Mary Calmes, RJ Scott (naturally :)), and a few others. If I feel too Scrooge-like, then I read either Steve Berry or David Gibbins. Thriller writers, yes, but do the trick for me to get over the "Bah, humbugs."

Having said that, this time of the year is one of my favorites. I love the traditions that go with it, the greenery, and, yes, the cooler temperatures. (On a side note, even after three-qaurters of my life spent in Florida, Christmas still isn't quite Christmas without snow, but that's another issue.)

I love the time spent with family and the blending of two different tradition styles that is in our home. We put up the outside lights and tree and decorate it last weekend of November as opposed to right before Christmas the way Mom grew up with in Poland. Opening any gifts is usually done Christmas Eve and not on the traditionally December 6 (if we visit Poland around that date, we usually do a little something with whichever close friends we might be with then - that depends on how things work out as we know a few different families).

The dinner setting for Christmas Eve is semi-traditional too. A traditional Wigilia (Polish for Christmas Eve) has about 12 courses from appetizers to dessert. Usually being just me and my folks, we pick some of our favorite foods and have that and not the full dinner. Our setting usually has barszcz (pronounced bar-sh-ch and is beet soup) with uszka (ooshka, Polish mushroom filled tortellini) which we usually make at home (though we cheat with the dough for the uszka and use won-ton wrappers). This is usually followed by either fish or another dish picked that does not include meat (in Poland, Christmas Eve eating does not involve any meat).

Dessert is usually a wonderful walnut torte Mom bakes. Naturally, we have all sorts of other baked goods, but those vary from year to year depending on what everyone feels like having. As far as table setting goes, sometimes we follow Polish tradition and have hay underneat the tablecloth (to denote the stable), sometimes we don't, but, despite there usually only being just the three of us, we always set an extra place setting at the table. Later in the evening we watch Midnight Mass from the Vatican.

Christmas itself we usually have ham. Dad usually finds a nice ham in the store which Mom cooks further (and, to our tastes, it tops anything we've ever bought in the store) and assorted side dishes that depend on mood. We do try for something different than the usual here and 'fancy' things up a little bit.

All in all, what I really enjoy about the holiday season is spending time with family and enjoying each others company.

Mom's Walnut TorteCake

8 eggs, separated
8 3/4 oz. (248 g) powdered sugar
8 3/4 oz. (248 g) walnuts, finely ground
juice from one lemon
3 Tablespoons (44mL) bread crumbs
Baker's Joy spray and bread crumbs for pan
Spray pan with Baker's Joy and spread the crumbs on the sides and bottom of pan (round form preferred).
Turn over on to 350 F (about 177C) degrees.
Beat egg yolks and powdered sugar together at high speed until thick and white in color.
Gradually add lemon juice and beat.
Change to low speed and add ground walnuts and bread crumbs.
In separate bowl, beat egg whites into stiff peaks and fold into batter.
Pour mixture into pan and bake for 35-40 minutes (time dependent on oven, might take longer in some). Check center with toothpick and if it comes out clean, the torte is done. If not, bake a little bit longer.
Cool torte in pan for about 10 minutes, then take it out of the pan and cool completely on wire rack.
Wrap torte in plastic wrap and store overnight in refrigerator.
Cut into 2 layers the following day and pour two tablespoons of cognac on the inside of the torte.

Icing

1 cup (237 mL) of finely ground walnuts
4 egg yolks
8 3/4 oz (248 mL) powdered sugar
8 3/4 oz (248 mL) unsalted butter
1 Tblspn. (15 mL) dark rum
2 Tblspn. (30 mL) cognac
1 tspn. (5 mL) black walnut extract
Walnut halves for decoration (preferrably dipped in chocolate)
Beat egg yolks and powdered sugar until white in color.
Gradually add softened butter and beat well.
Slowly add ground walnuts, rum, cognac, and walnut extract
Refrigerate the resulting mixture for an hour.
Ice the torte between the layers and on the outside and smooth the icing with a hot knife.
Grind one cup (237 mL) of walnuts and cover the icing completely.
Add the chocolate covered walnuts on the outside edge of the torte.
Freeze torte overnight and serve it the next day.

This recipe is a base for any nut torte.

Where the recipe calls for finely ground walnuts, just exchange with finely ground almonds, hazelnuts, or any other nuts you might wish, and substitute extracts accordingly.

This torte can be stored in the freezer for up to one week, but has to be tightly covered with plastic wrap.

Let It Snow by Heidi Cullinan: A very enjoyable Christmas book. Fantastic characters, so very different from each other. Small town guy meets fancy City guy. Well worth reading for a great romance. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17608230-let-it-snow?from_search=true

Who Needs Christmas?

Christmas holds no joy for me; it was ruined 8 years ago when I started to work in retail. Every year I’m subjected to constant Christmas songs for 9 hours a day, I witness usually lovely people turn awful while rushing to get the best presents and those cute little children turn into brats.

I started to avoid anything Christmas themed including books because real life Christmas was an even bigger disappointment after reading the wonderful endings most Christmas themed books have.

That was until 2012 when a new series based on Christmas caught my attention. A group of twelve elves left the North Pole to be free of all things Christmas and have been living together for decades. All this time they have gone without finding their mates, but when the first of the twelve finds his, the rest have hope for themselves.

For the 12 days of Christmas Joyee Flynn released a book about her kinky elves who hated Christmas. Unable to resist I bought the first one, Screw Santa. Now these books aren’t for everyone, they are a bit of fun and a simple easy read. If you're looking for light entertainment, a lot of humor and poking fun at existing elf and Christmas legends this could be for you.

The titles of the books alone make me laugh, Stripe My Pole and Flush The Twinkles always make me giggle. After reading the first I liked it enough to read the second, then the third and so on till I finished the series. For the first time in years I enjoyed something Christmas themed.

I love the humour in these books, it reminds me of the joy and fun that Christmas can be. The Elves all have their own reasons for hating Christmas which do add to the plot of the books but to me the aim is to show that Christmas is what you make of it. Spending time with family and friends is what’s important and that Christmas is a time when that’s possible.

The next year as Christmas came around again, feeling like it arrives earlier and earlier, I started my usual Bah Humbug attitude. The Christmas decorations started going up just after Halloween, the stores started getting the early Christmas themed gifts in and the Toy adverts on the TV started taking over.

Looking through my e-reader for my next re-read I came across the Who Needs Christmas folder and I remembered the fun I had reading them the year before. Memories of sitting on my lunch at work and laughing out loud like a crazy person making my day better flooded me and I knew I would be reading them again.

Now I had something to look forward to, I eagerly counted down the days till the day I could start. The books became my Advent Calendar getting to read one each day on the run up to Christmas Day. The second reading was like the first, I loved every minute of these books and they never failed to put a smile on my face.

Now its 2014 and its November, the Christmas decorations are up, the adverts are playing on the TV and I’ve heard my first Christmas song. I’m already Bah Humbuging, I ordered all my Christmas presents online, they’ve been delivered and are in there hiding places so I have no need to shop in December at all. I scowl at every twinkle light I see and growl when asked if I want gingerbread in my Latte at the coffee shop.

The only thing I’m looking forward to is my now Christmas tradition of re-reading my Elves who hate Christmas. The date is marked in my diary and I’ve made sure there already loaded on my ereader, the countdown has begun.

Charlie Cochrane talks murder

Charlie Cochrane talks murder

Charlie, you started out writing romances, so what made you turn to crime?

I wish I could steal Nicky Slade’s answer to this. She was once asked, over dinner, by a posh and patronising bloke, “What do you do, my dear?” To which she replied, “I murder people.”

That’s part of the appeal in being an author. When you write romances sometimes you feel you’re living that romance – the excitement of flirtation comes alive, the love scenes stir your emotions as you commit them to the screen, the characters become real and alive. So what about when you write a thriller or crime book? Do you get the thrill of “committing a murder” and getting away with it? Actually, I’m not sure that’s the sort of thrill I want.

What I do like is the sense of creating, and picking apart, a puzzle. I’ve always liked puzzles, quizzes, games and the like and have always read a wide range of mysteries. Maybe it was natural to try my hand at creating my own, whether historical or contemporary. And writing these books appeals to my inherent belief that good should triumph over evil. Maybe that brings us full circle to romance again?

Tea and sympathy have never been so deadly.
Schoolteacher Adam Matthews just wants to help select a new headteacher and go home. The governors at Lindenshaw St Crispin’s have already failed miserably at finding the right candidate, so it’s make or break this second time round. But when one of the applicants is found strangled in the school, what should have been a straightforward decision turns tempestuous as a flash flood in their small English village.
Inspector Robin Bright isn’t thrilled to be back at St. Crispin’s. Memories of his days there are foul enough without tossing in a complicated murder case. And that handsome young teacher has him reminding himself not to fraternize with a witness. But it’s not long before Robin is relying on Adam for more than just his testimony.

As secrets amongst the governors emerge and a second person turns up dead, Robin needs to focus less on Adam and more on his investigation. But there are too many suspects, too many lies, and too many loose ends. Before they know it, Robin and Adam are fighting for their lives and their hearts.

Excerpt:

As if on cue, the rozzers—it had to be the police, Adam thought, as no other grey-suited individuals would be lurking around the school—came through it.

“Ah, Inspector Bright,” Victor said. “We were just wondering when you’d be here to tell us what’s going on.”

“A murder enquiry’s going on.” The inspector’s voice preceded him into the room.

Christine clasped her hands to her mouth. “Murder? Oh . . .”

The inspector appeared, nodding sympathetically. “I’m afraid so. Which means we’ll need to get a statement from each one of you before you can go.”

If the policeman said anything else, Adam didn’t quite catch it. He was feeling confused enough, so to have—Wright, Bright, what the hell had Victor said his name was?—walk through the door looking like that sent his thoughts off in ten directions. Policemen weren’t supposed to be so tall, dark, and stupidly handsome. Apart from in Adam’s fantasies.

Oliver’s voice interrupted the unwanted germination of some inappropriate thoughts in Adam’s brain. “Perhaps you could take Mrs. Probert’s statement first? She has two small children at the school, and they’ll need her to pick them up at the end of the lessons.” His unexpected thoughtfulness earned him one of Christine’s stunning smiles.

“Happy to oblige,” the inspector said with kindness.

Why did Adam never seem to meet blokes who reacted to his smile the way they reacted to Christine’s? Why couldn’t this policeman favour him with a flash of those dark eyes?

“Perhaps you could come along now, Mrs. Probert, and my sergeant could take you through things?” The sergeant looked like that was the best news he’d heard all day. “Anyone else need to get away urgently?”

For a moment—only a moment—Adam felt like shouting, Take me, take me now! but this was serious business. Was it defiance or denial in the face of sudden death that made him feel like behaving like a schoolboy? Or was it simply the incongruity of somebody like the inspector walking through the door? Instant chemistry, that’s what they called it, but he’d never come across such a sensation before. It was the romantic equivalent of being hit over the head with a sock full of wet sand.

Then he remembered why the police were here—Youngs’s body, those awful teeth—and felt sick again.

Texas Fall (Texas #6)

Texas Fall (Texas #6)

Cover Art by Meredith Russell
The sixth book in the Texas series has a little of everything. Drama, family and most of all love between Riley and Jack and their children.

The Book

Jack is focusing on building an equine therapy school for children with special needs and works hard along side his normal horse training and breeding program. He and Riley have settled into a softer, quieter, kind of family life, but that doesn't stop them using the barn with the door to the fullest!

But the lull comes before the storm.

Riley and his new assistant travel to Laredo, and across the border into Neuvo Laredo as part of an exploratory team and things very quickly go to hell. Riley is caught in some serious Cartel problems and suddenly everything Jack holds dear is threatened.

Add in Vaughn and Darren's story, revisiting Robbie, Eli, Liam and Marcus, alongside Sean and Eden and the wedding that never was, and this story promises you everything you want from a Texas series book.

Reviews

Rainbow Books Reviews - 5/5 - "....What an exciting installment in the Campbell-Hayes saga! It is every bit as entertaining, suspenseful, and hot as previous books, and I enjoyed reading it immensely. If you like the Campbell-Hayes family and want to find out what's going on in their lives, if you enjoy the combination of a soap opera and an action/adventure, and if you're looking for a read that has family, new love, lots of heat and love between loving husbands, and the beautiful setting of a ranch in the heart of Texas, don’t miss this book."

Guilty Indulgence Site Reviews - 5/5 - "....I will never get tired of reading about these two men and the life that they are building. From the moment that I opened Heart of Texas I knew that this would be a series that I would go back to again and again. Each addition brings more and I can just not get enough.

Start from the beginning of this epic saga and just keep coming back for the passion, family and love...."

Sexy Erotic Exciting Reviews - 5/5 - "....Sentimental, introspective, intrigue and love~ everything I expected from R.J. Scott’s newest edition to her Texas series, Texas Fall. No one writes a loving, well-rounded realistic family like Ms. Scott, and Texas Fall did not disappoint....

.... The epilogue had me choked and teary-eyed~ Ms. Scott, what you do to me! Texas Fall delivered beautiful dialogue, meaningful characters and a love of self and family.

Definite S.E.X...."

Joyfully Jay - 5/5 -  "....Being the sixth book in the series, Scott has maintained a solid setting for the Texas stories, especially the Double D from beginning to present day.  That, and our knowledge of the secondary characters and the locales where the story takes place, is so deeply ingrained in us, the readers, that every time we open a book, it is like coming home.

As I alluded to above, there is so much that happens in Texas Fall, with ups and downs throughout the story that kept me glued to my iPad from beginning to end.  Although Riley’s kidnapping is traumatic for all, the trial was stressful for Liam, and the new therapy riding program is keeping Jack on his toes, these things end up being just bumps, albeit some pretty big bumps, in the road for the family. I am hopeful that with all of the new, fresh additions, we will see more of the gang at the Double D.  A must read series, for sure...."

The Blogger Girls - "....What makes this series so special is that, despite the over the top drama (at times), the relationship between Riley and Jack is so, so amazing. They love each other so much, and they are not afraid to show it. In some series, the couples’ love is tested, and that can be hard when we go through so much strife to get them together just to have them pulled apart again and again. In this series, Jack and Riley are strong and stay strong and loving throughout and fight together against outside issues.

R.J. Scott writes some amazingly hot sex scenes, tender love scenes, as well as high and exciting drama. The Texas series is on fire with all this, and I can’t wait for more!..."

Crystal's Many Reviews - 5/5 - "....Texas Fall is one of my top picks for the Texas series. After the suspense and action surrounding Liam in the previous installment, I wasn’t sure how Ms. Scott was going to top it. Yet she did with a storyline that would feel contrived for many characters, yet is completely within the realm of possibility for Riley considering his wealth and profession. Additionally we got to see Liam stand up for himself and find the family and home he has been looking for. These plotlines combine to make for another installment in the series that has been added to my reread list...."

Excerpt

Chapter 1

Jack was happy. He had a soft beer buzz going, and he was with his horses. The only thing that could make things better was if Riley was with him, but he wasn’t going to pull Riley out of the party just to keep Jack company. On the other hand, he wasn’t moving inside any time soon. He had enough finger food to last him a few days wrapped in a napkin, and he didn’t need to go back in unless there was some kind of natural disaster. Parties and Jack Campbell-Hayes did not mix; even New Year’s was something he avoided. Not that he was introverted, it was just the whole entire family was here—every single one of them—and they all wanted to talk to him about one thing or another. When Max had decided it was too chaotic and disappeared with Carol into his sensory room, Jack had wanted to go as well.

“You can’t hide the whole night,” Riley said from behind him. Jack turned to face his husband, leaning back against the stable door and waiting for the lecture. Riley was happy as a pig in shit right in the middle of it all: juggling babies, catering, socializing, and hell, everything that Jack was avoiding right about now. “People asked where you were,” Riley added.

Riley sure looked good tonight, his blond hair just this side of bed-head spiky, his long legs in black pants, the dark green shirt so perfect against his warm skin tones, and his hazel eyes sparkling with enthusiasm for life. Sexy. Very sexy, all toned and slim and hard and hot. Jack cleared the thoughts of kissing the life out of Riley from his head. He’d need all his faculties to deal with Riley when he knew damn well Riley wanted him to go back inside and host the party.

Anyway, he was suspicious that anyone really worried where he’d gone. “Who asked?”

Riley stepped right up into his space, close enough so that Jack could inhale the scent of his man. The combination of familiar citrus was underscored by deeper notes of mulled spices from the kitchen and some punch concoction Eden had made.

“Actually, no one asked,” Riley admitted. “Josh mentioned that he was impressed you’d lasted an hour.”

Jack huffed a laugh. He was surprised his brother hadn’t come out and hidden right next to him. Seemed that enjoying socializing skipped the male Campbell line entirely.

“So,” Jack began slowly. “What are you doing out here?”

Riley placed his hands on Jack’s hips, then slid his fingers through belt loops to tug Jack away from the door and flush up to him.

“I was asking myself,” he explained, “just where would my husband be when it’s only ten at night and he was looking for peace. I tried everywhere.” He pressed a gentle kiss to Jack’s lips, then smiled down at him, that few inches in height he had just enough to force Jack to lean his head back a little. “Actually that’s a lie. I looked in the twins’ room, checked in on Max, then came here.”

“Is Max okay?”

“Carol is keeping an eye on him. He doesn’t get why all these people are here and it’s all a bit much for him, but he’s okay.”

“And the twins? Did Connor still look restless?”

“Connor was fast asleep.”

“And what about Lexie—”

“Lexie was sleeping too, so I came out here and I found you.”

Jack twisted his fingers together behind Riley’s head and brushed his erection against Riley’s. It didn’t seem like they were in each other’s company more than ten seconds and Jack was already turned on. Thank God Riley appeared to have the same problem.

“What we gonna do?” Jack asked. He had plenty of ideas, the best of which involved rope and the barn and a whole lot of lube.

Riley slanted his head and kissed Jack thoroughly, never taking his hands from Jack’s belt and never moving. When they separated for air, Riley was smirking. Jack knew exactly what his husband was going to say. He wanted him back inside in that hell called the New Year’s Eve party.

“No,” Jack protested immediately.

“Two hours, Jack, just two hours. Go in, be all kinds of sociable, and as soon as the clock strikes twelve, you can come back out.”

“Riley—”

Riley silenced Jack with a finger pressed to his lips. He leaned close and whispered, “Two hours is all, Jack, you can manage that, and if you’re a good boy…” Jack couldn’t hold back the laugh at that point as Riley waggled his eyebrows suggestively.

“What do you plan on doing as my reward?”

Riley leaned in for one last kiss, then turned smartly on his heel.

“For you to find out,” he threw over his shoulder. “You have five.”

Jack turned back to pet Solo Cal, who butted him and whuffed on his hand.

“God save me from being sociable,” Robbie muttered as he joined Jack at the stable as soon as Riley disappeared. “If I have to dance once more…” His tone threatened payback, and Jack imagined Eli was still hogging the small dance area that everyone had made in the marquee off the kitchen, little more than a few tables pushed to one side. Eli and Riley, along with Marcus, Eden, and Hayley, had been dancing like they were on uppers.

“You bring beer?” Jack asked.

Robbie handed over a cold one and gestured to the three more under his arm. “Thought I’d drag these ones out.”

“I’ve already had Riley out here telling me I should be inside. I give it five before Eli does the same to you.”

Robbie muttered something under his breath that sounded suspiciously like a string of curse words along with Eli’s name. He held out his hand to Solo Cal and received the same chuff of attention that Jack had. Jack’s horses loved Robbie, the quiet man with the strange mix of Aussie and American in his accent. The day Jack’d taken him on had been a good one and now that Robbie had Eli, his staying was permanent. In fact, he had a stake in the D’s horse training and breeding program. Jack couldn’t wish for a better right-hand man.

As Jack could have predicted, another cowboy soon appeared at their side.

“Jesus Christ,” Liam cursed and joined them in the stable. Without words, Robbie gave him a beer, and Liam downed half of the bottle in long swallows. Only then did he talk. “Tell me again where Marcus gets all his damn energy?”

Jack shrugged. “Same place as Riley and Eli, it seems.”

“Cowboys shouldn’t be indoors,” Liam pointed out. “Ain’t natural.”

“It’s not natural,” Robbie corrected.

“That’s what I said,” Liam agreed.

Jack glanced over at the latest addition to the D. Liam was still looking a bit on the thin side, and he had perpetual worry written into his expression. Didn’t matter that he had a boyfriend and that he and Marcus were close. He hadn’t truly found his peace yet and still held the anxiety from the attack in the barn heavy on his shoulders.

It didn’t help that the mail between Christmas and New Year’s had held a letter with a court appearance date. Twenty-sixth of January was the day Liam would be facing his attacker. Didn’t matter that Yuri Fensin had admitted his part in the attack, this was wider than that. Liam had passed enough evidence to have Hank Castille in the dock as well for the abuse Liam had suffered at the man’s hand when he was younger. A lot hinged on Liam’s testimony and that of a couple other witnesses, all boys as young as Liam or younger.

So yeah, the weight of it was on Liam, and he looked tired. He was still working long days, putting in his hours, making a home with Marcus in the apartment over the barn. Of the three of them standing there, he was the one who didn’t need to be in a place where people danced and expected a body to be smiling all the time. He needed something else.

“Liam,” Marcus said from the door. Jack sighed inwardly. His quiet place was getting busier than the party. “You okay?”

Liam turned to face Marcus, and Jack couldn’t help but see the shine of emotion in Liam’s eyes or the serious expression on Marcus’s face.

“Thinking Liam and you should have your own New Year’s,” Robbie suggested.

Marcus nodded and held out a hand that Liam took. “Is that okay, Jack?”

Jack frowned. What did it have to do with him? Never mind Marcus was looking for his permission and Liam really needed the support. “Get off before Riley catches you,” he joked. Liam and Marcus left quickly. Now there was only the two of them left—and Jack’s five minutes were up.

“Keep my fence warm,” he muttered. After knocking shoulders with Robbie, he went indoors and into the chaos that was a family celebration. He’d done worse. Once he’d spent fourteen hours with a pregnant mare in distress. He could do this.

* * * * *

Riley wasn’t exactly watching for Jack. Not really. It just happened that whenever Jack walked into a room, Riley was aware of exactly when it happened. Somehow he always looked over at the moment Jack was looking for him. Time stopped for a second, One Direction faded into the background, as did Hayley’s laughter with her cousins and Eli and Eden twirling in some mad parody of a tango; everything faded.

Every single damn time Riley looked at Jack, his heart hitched and emotion choked him.

Mine. I love him and he’s mine, and he’s the other half of me, and everything. Yeah, it didn’t make much sense, this overwhelming surge of ownership, of affection and need, but it was all it took for Riley to cross over and steal a heated kiss right there in front of the entire family. When he pulled back, Jack was smirking that infuriating laconic cowboy smile and his blue eyes shone with emotion. Dressed from head to toe in black, pants, matching shirt shot through with silver, and that Texas belt buckle, he was edible and all Riley’s.

“You missed me?” Jack teased.

“No,” Riley said. “Just warming up for midnight. Let’s get beer.”

A party tent off the side of the kitchen extended the house for this get-together with God knows how many family and friends milling around. Riley knew his mom and dad were in there somewhere, clapping along to Hayley’s dancing, which in itself was a miracle. Sandra Hayes was the last person Riley ever imagined would clap along to anything. But where her granddaughter was concerned, all the Southern genteel charm was put to bed and instead out came the mad-eyed grandma who loved her grandchildren. She’d never have the natural warmth that Donna exuded, but she was trying hard and she had a special connection to Hayley that Riley loved to watch.

The two men picked up beer, or rather, Jack did; Riley still had a cold fear about what would happen if they both got drunk. Although Jack didn’t ordinarily get drunk and neither did Riley, he wanted one of them to be entirely sober in case the twins needed them, or Max or Hayley. He opened a can of Sprite, and the icy-cold bubbles felt good on his tongue. He finished it off as he joined in with a heated debate about whether Brad was hotter than Angelina. Jack wandered off again, but this time it was just to stand with his brother and sister-in-law and their kids.

Logan was growing up, and he was looking an awful lot like his Uncle Jack. With the requisite floppy hair over one eye, he was a good-looking kid, and Riley couldn’t fail to notice Hayley looking over at Logan every so often. She still had that crush on her cousin, but Logan was three years older and headed for college in a year or so. Riley didn’t like to admit it, but he hoped to hell Hayley got over it. Not because he didn’t like Logan, Logan was a good kid, but Riley just wasn’t ready for Hayley to be dating anyone, let alone her kind-of-cousin.

“You look awfully serious, big brother.” Eden smiled up at him, and he pulled her into his side. Sean wasn’t there that night, but Eden didn’t seem too fazed by that. The couple had moved to a better place slowly but surely, and although Riley still had a few small reservations over Sean, he could see his sister was happy. For that Sean got a million brownie points.

“Just counting my blessings,” Riley answered. She cuddled in close and wrapped her arms around his waist, and Riley didn’t want to let her go. He had to eventually, especially when she wriggled, which was the only way she could get out of one of her brother’s bear hugs. She looked well, happy, her little black dress and strappy heels both covered in soft glitter. Riley glanced down at himself and the smattering of glitter he now had on his shirt.

“Your fault,” she said, and with a grin, she left.

He didn’t have time to think about how he was going to remove the glitter when Hayley ran to him and clung to him, asking him to go with her. He opened his mouth to ask what was wrong, but he could see the emotion in his daughter’s eyes. She was close to crying, and as soon as he followed her into the good room, those tears began to fall. Riley sat on the sofa and pulled her into his arms. She was such an itty-bitty thing, and she needed a hug. She held him so tight and she was sobbing, her slim form shaking in his hold. Riley’s heart split in two.

“What happened, sweetie?” he asked when her crying had settled to a few hitched breaths.

“It’s Logan,” she began.

Riley’s chest tightened. Hayley’s big crush was obvious to everyone. Had Logan done something? Had he hurt Hayley? He was a good kid, but that didn’t mean Riley wouldn’t flatten him if he’d upset her. Jack would just have to understand; after all, this was their daughter and daughter trumped nephew. The daddy side of him wanted to call Logan out, the sensible adult side of him was trying to be patient.

“What happened?”

“He’s… he’s… g-got a girlfriend.” Hayley managed to get the words out before sobbing into Riley’s shirt, and Riley held her as his little girl’s heart broke into a million pieces. He stroked her long blonde hair and back. He felt powerless, but he knew this was only the first of so much that Hayley would be experiencing, and it wasn’t like a skinned knee or strep, he was helpless here.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart,” he said gently as he stroked her back, marveling at the softness of her hair and her scent and the very wonder of holding his teenage daughter in his arms. She still loved them at the moment; she hadn’t reached that point where a father’s love would be replaced by the angst of teenage years or the love of another male.

“I’m so stupid,” she said. “He’s at a school with girls, and I’m stuck at mine.”

Hayley being at a school with just girls was a bone of contention between Hayley and her dads. She loved it there, she was safe, she had friends, and Riley had gone to an all-boys school for a short while and it hadn’t done him any harm. But she wanted a boyfriend, and she’d set her sights on Logan.

“He’s older than you,” Riley began quietly. He wasn’t entirely sure how that was going to go. She’d either snap at it by saying Logan wasn’t too old, or she’d understand where he was coming from.

“I know,” she said so softly that Riley could barely hear her. “But when I’m older, when I’m bigger and sexy and have boobs, then he’ll be sorry.”

Riley nearly choked on a combination of a laugh and groan. He almost felt sorry for Logan. Hayley reminded him of Eden in so many ways, so utterly convinced of her journey through life, so focused. But even though he tried to be the hands-on dad, listening to what his daughter said, he still couldn’t get his head around talking about Hayley and her boobs.

“Hey, guys,” Jack said. He’d clearly been sent in for more beer if the empties in the box he was holding was anything to go by. The spare beer was piled in crates in the corner, most of it left over from Robbie and Eli’s housewarming debacle. He set the box down and came to sit next to Riley. Hayley shuffled a little so she could place a hand on Jack’s arm. “What’s up?” he asked carefully.

“Logan has a girlfriend,” she said. At least now she had stopped crying.

“Aww, baby, I’m sorry,” Jack said. He knew she had a crush on his nephew, but Riley guessed his husband didn’t imagine it went as deep as this. Neither of them were experts on girls, not really. They just listened to their hearts and tried for the best. She sniffed one last time, then pushed herself up and away from Riley. She cried very prettily, another thing she got from Lexie and Eden, clearly. Her brown eyes were wide and her lashes wet and spiky, and she didn’t have any of that red-faced blotchiness Riley suffered with whenever he got emotional.

With enough drama to fulfill all of next week’s quota, she suddenly inhaled sharply and flailed off of Riley’s lap clutching at her face.

“I need to find Eden to fix my makeup. Love you, Dad. Love you, Pappa.”

Then the whirlwind that was Hayley left the room. Riley looked at Jack, and Jack returned the look.

“Hayley is wearing makeup?” Jack asked.

“Just some lip gloss and blusher,” Riley answered, “just for tonight. She asked me if it was okay. I tried to make it look like I was cool with it.”

Jack grinned. “I love that you did that.”

Riley couldn’t help sounding defensive. “Eden asked me if it was okay. It can’t hurt, right?”

Jack leaned into Riley and chuckled. “You are so easy.”

Riley smacked him, then pressed a kiss to the same place. “Up and at ’em, cowboy. We have socializing to do.”

“I’m not moving.” Jack settled back on the sofa, and Riley straddled him.

He leaned in and whispered, “You, me, barn, my mouth on you, my cock in you, lube. Now get your ass up.”

“Jack, where’s the be— Jesus, guys… get a room.” Josh stood at the door, arms over his chest. “We have a beer emergency out there.”

Jack ignored his brother and stared into Riley’s eyes. “I’m holding you to that, Riley.”

Riley smirked, then rolled up and off Jack. Whistling, he sauntered past Josh, deliberately patting Josh on the chest. Josh dramatically rubbed at the place Riley touched him.

“Eww, gay cooties. Jack, get your man off me.”

Riley left the brothers laughing. Trouble was, whispering all that in Jack’s ear had him imagining doing those things right the fuck now.

He’d basically screwed himself over.

Way to go, Riley. Idiot.

Nano update

Nano update

So today I passed my official Nano wordcount... I  wasn't really *doing* Nano, but what Nano gives is a very handy tool to count my words. I like that tool. I wish it was available all year around.

I finished off Texas 6 at the beginning of the month, and then added another 2k in the middle of the month (which i forgot to add).

I wrote Angel In A Book Shop.

Then, I wrote 16,000 on Alpha, Delta.

Meanwhile I was editing Texas 6 (mostly the flat areas I should imagine).

So yep, November has been a very good month for writing.

I also realised I write more than what I count, blog posts for the Texas Fall blog tour, blog posts elsewhere, not to mention the amount of words on Facebook... ROFL... and the missing 2k on Texas. *adjusts halo*.

December isn't that representative but I may actually keep an eye on what kind of word counts I manage as it seems to be a motivating tool for me. :)

Jack's stressful, high-powered life leaves no time for anything except a casual friendship-with-benefits with his neighbor Henry, a laid-back, outdoors type with excellent computer skills.

It's the perfect arrangement for two men who are attracted to each other but don't have much else in common. Then a few days before Christmas, Jack's holiday plans are thwarted, leaving him home with just his volatile PC for company while Henry—his usual tech support—is on his way to a secluded Christmas hideaway.

So what’s Jack to do when, to his horror, weird pop-ups start appearing?

Review 5/5

I thought this was going to be light and fluffy... a cutesy smiley short. But, I cried. I just got so caught up in the story and I felt everything Jack was feeling. The perfect short story with a glass of wine and some Christmas chocolates.

Unwrapping Hank - Eli Easton 6/5 & Recommended Read

Sloane loves a good mystery. He grew up as the son of two psychiatrists, so he finds most people tediously easy to figure out. He finds his way to Pennsylvania State University, longing for a rural experience, and ends up being lured into joining a frat by Micah Springfield, the hippest guy on campus.

Nothing in Sloane’s classes is as intriguing as Hank Springfield, Micah’s brother and fellow frat house member. Hank looks like a tough guy—big muscles, tatts, and a beard—but his eyes are soft and sweet. He acts dumb, but he’s a philosophy major. He’s presumably straight, but then why does Sloane feel such crazy chemistry whenever Hank is around? And why does Hank hate Sloane so much?

When Sloane ends up stuck on campus over Christmas, Micah invites him to spend the holidays at their family farm in Amish country. It’s a chance to experience a true Americana Christmas--and further investigate the mystery that is Hank Springfield. Can Sloane unlock the secrets of this family and unwrap the heart hidden inside the beefcake?

Review 6/5 and only the second book I've read this year to get that!

This to me is a perfect Christmas book... love... holidays... family... animals... more love... a *bad* guy... the *good guys* and most of all humour. I love Eli Easton's books and this one is just the right book to sit with the Christmas tree and lose yourself in a funny, endearing, happy, loving and it left me smiling like an idiot.
